NY State Safe Boating Course
New York State mandates completion of a Safe Boating Course for anyone operating a motorboat who was born on or after May 1, 1996. If you have already completed a Safe Boating Course in any state, you are covered. If not, take the opportunity to enroll in the 8-hour course offered by the Fishers Island Community Center (ICC).
This course will be presented by licensed NYS boating instructor Elby Burr in the large conference room over 2 mornings July 10 & 11th from 8:00am – 12:00pm. Course booklets will be provided.
Register in advance by contacting the instructor Elby Burr at email@example.com or (631) 788-7475. Please sign up as soon as possible. The State requires a class size must be between 6 and 30 students.
- Students under the age of 10 are not allowed to take the course
- Elby cant give the class unless he has at least 6 students
- Participants will pay instructor directly with cash or check. (Checks made out to “NY State Parks & Rec”.)
When this mandate was announced during the January 2014 State of the State address, Governor Cuomo also announced a new program that would allow for certain permits, certificates and licenses to be indicated on documents, such as a driver’s license and learner’s permit, issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles. This will include an anchor symbol indicating that the holder of that document has completed the New York Safe Boating Course.
